Location: Shin Shirakawa Station
This location may be a little out of the way for most people, but if you ever find yourself passing through the northern part of Japan at Shin Shirakawa, you should try these noodles! I was excited to find them so close to the shinkansen station gates. I had a little bit of extra time before my train left and I didn’t eat dinner yet, so I decided to give them a shot.
The shop was a lot better than I expected. I don’t often eat station noodles, but I’m usually pretty content whenever I do eat them. They’re always tastier than the noodles I would expect to find at a station in America. It was really cold when I went that day, so I eagerly ordered a bowl of curry udon noodles. I know your initial reaction might be to turn your nose up at this dish, but curry with udon is a match made in heaven. The thickness of the udon noodles mixes well with the viscosity of the curry. When you mix a bowl of hot curry with some carbs on a winter day, there’s nothing better to fill up your belly.
I saw the salaryman next to me order a side of karaage, so I decided to follow suit and order one as well. Fried chicken and noodles are always great, but what was even better was the staff workers. The entire time I was eating, I watched as the two women working the shop bickered with each other. It was amusing, to say the least, and it added a bit of character to this shop. If you’re ever in the area, you should stop by this shop. It’s right in front of the station gates at Shin Shirakawa station in Fukushima.
